The Health of your Bengal Cat
My name is Arielle Griffiths MRCVS. I am a small animal veterinarian in the UK with a particular love of cats.
Bengals are a breed that due to their genetic make-up as hybrids derived originally from the Asian Leopard cat, remain very healthy. There are few inherited conditions that affect Bengal cats.
The main one that we are aware of, is large bowel diarrhoea causing a mucusy, and sometimes bloody diarrhoea. I deal with the treatment of this distressing condition below.
Bengals are built like true hunting felines and suffer few problems that we see with other breeds such as flat-nosed Persians or long-haired Birmans for example. They are mischievous and inquisitive in nature so the main problems we see as vets, is Bengals coming in with problems related to their inquisitive nature.
They love water and if your Bengal was to suffer with any ailment that requires a high water intake, my advice is to purchase a water fountain for your cat to drink from as they seem to prefer flowing water and this encourages water intake, rather than have them flick all the water with their paws (as Bengals are prone to do!).
